Si bien no existe ninguna posibilidad de que el asteroide entre en colisión con nuestro planeta, estará muy cerca para un objeto espacial de este tamaño”, precisó la agencia espacial estadounidense en un comunicado.

Denominado 2014-JO25, el asteroide mide aproximadamente 650 metros de diámetro y pasará a 1,8 millones de kilómetros de la Tierra, es decir, algo menos de cinco veces la distancia entre el planeta azul y la luna.

La última vez que el 2014-JO25 visitó la Tierra se remonta a 400 años atrás y no volverá a pasar cerca de ella hasta dentro de, por lo menos, 2.600 años.

El objeto espacial pasará cerca del planeta tras haber esquivado el Sol y luego continuará su camino hacia Júpiter, antes de volver hacia el centro del sistema solar.

En 2004, Toutatis, un asteroide mucho más grande — de 4,6 km de largo por 2,4 km de ancho, con forma de cacahuete— pasó a 1.549.719 km, es decir, cuatro veces la distancia entre la Tierra y la Luna.

La NASA también estimó que no presentaba ningún riesgo para el planeta, al menos durante 558 años, cuando volverá a pasar cerca de la Tierra, esa vez a una distancia mucho menor.

La próxima visita de un objeto espacial de grandes dimensiones no está prevista antes de 2027, cuando el asteroide 199-AN10, de 800 metros de diámetro, se acercará a unos 380.000 km a la Tierra (la distancia Tierra/Luna).

La visita del 19 de abril es una “oportunidad excepcional” para los astrónomos y los aficionados de observar el cielo, subrayó la NASA. Su superficie, dos veces más reflectante que la de la Luna, sería visible para un pequeño telescopio durante una o dos noches.
